MARCH NEWS & FEATURES

QUICK UPDATE:

You might remember I was lucky enough to have had my work featured in the last issue of Capture, Australia's Top Selling Pro Photography Magazine. Well they approached me again to include an additional image in the current Mar/Apr issue.

It's only one image - The Show's Over - but pretty cool nonetheless.

The magazine went on sale a few days ago and can be seen on newsstands across Australia.

It's a nice little magazine if you're interested in getting into the industry and starting out as an Assistant. Plenty of helpful articles and inspiring stories. And they're always looking for 'New Talent' so send your best work to marcgafen@yaffa.com.au.

Any other Assistants out there by the way???

Would love to know who you're working with and any tips or tricks for picking up extra work. Work for me continues to trickle in and I've been lucky enough to work with Blue Fish Productions and the award winning Mark Monro in recent weeks.

I've recently submitted the above image into the 2008 Kodak Salon Competition & Exhibition. Will let you know if I get lucky. :)

Hope this finds you all well and feeling creative. Thanks again for all your feedback and support!

Be good and keep shooting ~ Gary :)

DEVIANT FEATURE: :iconadnrey:

I stumbled across this guy a while back and was blown away. His mix of strong ideas and impressive Photoshop work is outstanding. He even includes links to walk you through the making of his images. What's even better is that most of his work needs nothing more than a little imagination and lots of creativity - the kind of thing you can set up against an empty wall or messy bedroom next time you're bored.

Check him out!

HAPPY 2008!!! NEWS & FEATURES

QUICK UPDATE:

I hope Christmas and the New Year has treated everyone well and your New Year's Resolutions are unbroken thus far. :)

We enjoyed our first Christmas in Australia, in the sun, and on the beach with a couple of Coronas and a BBQ for two! Very chilled out indeed and a nice end to a good year. We missed our families of course but enjoyed the novelty of it all and our first Christmas together in our new home from home.

My 'real world' photography had been progressing slowly but surely these past 12 months - sometimes it feels a little too slowly - but I'm learning the ropes in a new city and trying to figure out who to impress and how. Apparently Melbourne is known for having the highest population of photography students and working photographers which means there's both competition and opportunities out there. Plus everyone down here is so bloody nice that it never actually feels competitive (yet). We're all in the same boat and trying to do the best we can do.

In fact, I just picked up a nice feature in Capture, Australia's biggest selling professional photography magazine all thanks to a fellow photographer who pointed me in the right direction. Thanks Jorge! Keep an eye out for the Jan/Feb issue next time you're at the newsagents.

Capture Magazine, New Discoveries:

Born and raised in Northern Ireland, Gary Annett studied industrial Design at the University of Ulster and Desktop Publishing at Wesley College in the United States. After graduating he focused his attention on a collection of limited edition prints of Belfast, his home city, and his first solo exhibition 'Dark Days'.

Now Based in Melbourne, Annett has just finished projects for the Little Wonder Design Company and St Michael's Uniting Church and continues to develop a body of work that reflects his passion for photography and digital imaging while also assisting other professionals in the industry.

Annett says that he finds himself drawn to the ever-changing play of light in the natural and man-made environment - always looking for opportunities that capture a passing moment of time or an image that transforms the everyday and ordinary into something special, something unique.

"I believe strongly in introducing a human element into my work," Annett says, "giving the viewer a sense of scale and a way into the image - a heart and soul so they can relate." With many of Annett's images, he strives to "transform rather ordinary places through the use of light." Ultimately, he hopes that "perhaps as photographers we can help people see the world differently through our images and our stories."

IN OTHER NEWS:

The great `Davenit posted this video back in December in a journal titled 'Watch this video and get real pissed..." If, like me, you love conspiracy theories and the idea that the news we're given is often filtered and reduced to the dumbest common dominator then you'll love this.

Next time you get tired of Pop Idol overdose or CNN sound bites and have a couple of hours to spare check this out. Some of it might seem a little far fetched but some of it's been around for a long time and never gets as much as a whisper in the mainstream media. And if it sparks your interest pick up the nearest Noam Chomsky book and let one of America's leading academics walk you through the history of news that conveniently falls through the cracks.

Enjoy! :) [link]

NEW WEBSITE

QUICK UPDATE:

I've been piecing together a new website for a while now and am happy to say that it's finally up and running. Something simple and easy to navigate. I've had too many friends click through to dA and end up completely lost - either by clicking into my favorites or into someone else's gallery. Figured this would be handy as a static site when looking for work etc.

If you have a few minutes stop by and check it out and let me know what you think. I've noticed it doesn't look as slick on a PC as it does on my PowerBook but I think that's out of my control. I'm definitely no coder. It's mostly template based but I've spent a lot time tweaking the settings and making it run smoothly. Hopefully.

ST MICHAEL'S CALENDAR

Journal Entry: Sun Nov 18, 2007, 7:47 PM
GVA Header
QUICK UPDATE:

Back in July I was commissioned to produce a calendar for St Michael's Uniting Church in Melbourne. Having only been in Australia for 5 months at that stage it was the perfect opportunity to apply all my practice over the past couple of years to a real world project. It would be the church's first calendar and we were both eager to try and do something a little different. As it would turn out there isn't a single full interior or exterior shot of the church. Instead we wanted to show St Michael's in a new light, so to speak, and to show a side of the church that hadn't been seen before.

Photography started back in early August and continued until the end of September. I was given full access to every crook and cranny, allowed to stop by unannounced and spent hours working in the church by myself. I climbed the church spire that even the caretaker hadn't done, fumbled around on the roof and spent hours playing with the lights. I remember in those first days feeling completely lost - with the vaguest of briefs - and a little overwhelmed at making a church calendar somewhat exciting. I mean, common, how my boring old calendars have we seen??

Yesterday, over 3 months later, the calendar and limited prints were released to an enthusiastic reception and lots of positive feedback. A lady who helps with the church archives kindly commented that she "has been photographing the church for years but never like THAT".

What I learned was that if you take the time to look long enough you'll find those hidden gems and when you do find your feet and start to look at things differently those 'keepers' start to show their face. I remember one afternoon when the church was dark looking up to see a 'cross' of reflected light peaking through a crack in the door. Quite appropriate for the setting (you can see it on the 4th page). It might not be a breakthrough image but I think it's a nice example that there's potential for a great image everywhere if you look at it the right way.

I've spent more time in church these past couple of months than I have in my entire life and hopefully we picked up a couple of nice images along the way. We started with a folder of hundreds and slowly, painfully, whittled it down to 12 pages. Of course some personal favorites didn't survive the chop. But what you get is a different look at St Michael's that I hope captures a little spirit of the place while satisfying the needs of the church to promote their new gardens and have some consistent visual theme throughout.

Let me know what you think and if there's any you particularly like I'll try to get them uploaded as individual deviations.

The calendars and prints are available from the 2nd floor of St Michael's Centre, Collins St, or after each Sunday service 10-11am. For more information please contact the church directly at (03) 9654 5120 or email office@stmichaels.org.au. All proceeds are in support of Activate Australia and their Leadership Development Programs for disadvantaged young people.

Many thanks to Leah, Sylvia & Alana for all the hard work on their end to make this happen and get my mini portfolio of sorts into hundreds of homes. :D
